Small Projects is proud to invite you to "As I Remember Them", a solo exhibition by Shwan Dler Qaradaki.

After his mother's passing in 2015, Shwan's connection and ties to the country of his birth Kurdistan, began fading even more. This feeling of grief and longing as well as strength and self-expectation -being a father himself, are central themes to the film he made about his mother, and this coming exhibition.

Shwan Dler Qaradaki (born June 8, 1977 in Suleimania in Iraqi Kurdistan) is a Norwegian visual artist who works with drawing, painting, photography, installation and video. He came to Norway as a refugee in 1999. Shwan's art problematizes identities in a multi-ethnic and multicultural world.

With a critical eye and in dialogue with his own work, Shwan aims to investigate the relationship between art and the experience of war. He wants to investigate how trauma affect people's self-image and self-understanding, and he combines his own experience with the voices of others to tell stories of our time.

Shwan studied fine arts at the Suleimani Institute of Fine Arts in Kurdistan, Iraq. He received his Bachelor and Master's degrees in Fine Arts at the Oslo National Academy of The Arts. He is an award-winning filmmaker, recipeint of the Oslo city artist prize in 2013, the Arts Council Nykommer Prize in 2015, and was selected as the festival artist at the Festspillene i Nord-Norge in 2016.
